The first type of synthesis is simply combining simple waveforms to produce more complicated spectra.  We call this ADDITIVE SYNTHESIS.

Here is a Pd "patch" that performs additive synthesis.  You can control the fundamental frequency—either with a MIDI keyboard or by changing the frequncy in Hertz.  You can also control the frequencies of up to 3 more oscillators by setting the ratios with respect to the fundamental.  You can also set the relative volume levels of each oscillator with the four sliders.

*Note:  To start, set the leftmost oscillator to 1.  This way your lowest oscillator will put out a frequency that corresponds to the key on the keyboard being pressed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_modulation_synthesis
