Your first piece will be a short music concréte piece (or "tape piece", if you prefer). The requirements your first piece are as follows:
1. Use at least 6 simultaneous tracks for part of the time.
2. Keep the piece between 1'30" and 2'00".
3. For your source recordings use individual sounds that you either record or find a recording of. You may sample a piece of musical material only if you process it in some way or edit it. (We'll talk more about how to build your pieces in class.)
4. Process at least 50% of your sounds (this means any kind of processing). If you do a lot of editing (cutting up sounds into a lot of pieces and reassembling them) instead of processing, you can lessen the amount of processing you do.
5. Use ProTools for all editing and mixing. (You may use other programs early on in the process to manipulate your sounds.)
6. Deliver a ProTools session file, audio file folder, and a ".aiff" (CD-track) file to the folder on Varese that I designate as the hand-in folder.
7. Hand it in by Wednesday October 3rd. We will listen to some pieces the in class shortly thereafter. Feel free to talk to me about what you're doing at any point in the process. The hardest parts of the project will be getting started with a basic idea and managing all the steps to realize your idea. You can save yourself time by having a plan and keeping things simple. Good luck...
